Rather than relying heavily on cloud storage, many of Eufy’s security systems emphasize local storage, keeping your video footage on a home hub to protect your privacy.The system supports a wide variety of devices — including wireless cameras, motion sensors, door/window sensors, alarm kits, and even wired NVR systems — all controlled from the Eufy Security app.You can remotely view live video, receive alerts, and choose different security modes like “Home,” “Away,” or “Geofencing.”ufy also offers professional monitoring (via third-party 24/7 centers) for a monthly fee, but you can also self-monitor, which means fewer ongoing costs.

The Chinese-based company Anker Innovations owns eufy along with other brands like Soundcore, Nebula, Roav and Anker. Along with smart security systems, cameras, and vacuums, Anker also sells everything from phone chargers to earphones and speakers.3 Their origin story? Steve Yang, a former software engineer for Google (maybe you’ve heard of it!), started Anker back in 2011. Many similar companies were started by former employees of large tech companies, and it seems to be a good way to make similar products for a fraction of the pricing of Nest cameras, for example. So far, Anker has a pretty good reputation, aside from recalled charging cables in 2016.4 With no security breaches, we feel we can trust eufy under the umbrella of Anker Innovations.

While Eufy doesn’t offer the broad third-party compatibility that some competitors do, it worked reliably with the essentials in our home. The trade-off, however, is that there’s no professional monitoring option, meaning we’re fully responsible for responding to any alerts ourselves.

AI Face Recognition

Eufy’s cameras don’t start out intelligent — you need to train them by tagging familiar faces or uploading photos. Think of it as teaching the system: This is Kayla. This is Ralph. Accuracy isn’t perfect at first. In our early tests, Eufy correctly recognized tagged faces only about 40% of the time. After a week of consistent exposure, recognition improved significantly and it began identifying our faces more reliably.

However, it still has limitations. Eufy can sometimes be slow to trigger, and fast-moving foot traffic can cause familiar people to be flagged as strangers.On the bright side, you can customize alerts so the system notifies you only when it sees a person — not the neighbor’s dog or a passing tricycle. This part works extremely well. And if you’ve ever gone on vacation only to receive constant notifications about squirrels performing acrobatics on your doorstep, you’ll definitely appreciate the smarter, more focused alerts.

Forever Power

Eufy’s solar-powered cameras are designed to run continuously with just one to two hours of sunlight per day. While I wasn’t able to personally test this feature on my eufyCam 3Cs, in theory, it provides near-constant operation without the need for frequent recharging. How well this holds up during shorter, darker winter days remains to be seen, but the concept of “forever power” is certainly appealing for those seeking low-maintenance home security.
